MODEL HISTORY
Based on the new 993 Carrera 2 coupe, the 993 Cup 3.8 was developed at Porsche’s competition department to replace the 964-based Carrera Cup 3.6 racer. Aimed squarely at the 1994 Supercup series, it utilized a new 3.8-litre M64/70 engine. This powerplant developed 310 bhp at 6,100 rpm, 40 more bhp than the earlier 3.6 Cup engine, and gave the car a top speed of 280 km/h. The new engine had a rev limit of 6,900 rpm, but as it utilized many valve-train components from its sister RSR, was capable of turning safely as high as 7,900 rpm. This meant that the engine was low stressed for a race engine and incredibly reliable. The new 6-speed gearbox has very short shifts and was also enhanced for more reliability with steel synchromesh rings. The 3.8 Cup engine type number is M64/70 and gearbox type number is G50/30. The upgraded six-speed G50/30 manual transaxle had 40% limited-slip.
A Matter rollcage was welded in, greatly improving chassis stiffness, but the car was otherwise stripped, losing its power steering, upholstery, carpeting, trim, and sound insulation. A single Recaro racing seat with Sabelt harness, a Momo steering wheel, a fire suppression system, and air jacks were installed.
The suspension was uprated and ride height lowered. Huge ventilated and cross-drilled disc brakes with five-channel ABS fronted 18-inch diameter Speedline three-piece center-lock wheels. An aluminum front hood, deletion of door reinforcement beams, and use of thinner side glass and a plastic rear window brought the 993 Cup racers’ weight down to a mere 1,100 kg. Interestingly, for 1994, these cars ran without front and rear spoilers, essentially in standard bodywork.
Porsche even managed to reduce the overall weight of their new 993 Cup car compared to the previous 964 Cup, with a further 20kg reduction. The 993 Cup weighs a mere 1100kg. The rear quarter side windows were now made from plexiglass. With the exception of the windscreen the remaining glass was all thin lightweight glass. The body work is lighter with no side impact beams in the doors and aluminium bonnet. Inside the car there is no sound insulation, no carpets, no headlining, no power steering, no hand brake, no passenger seat, not even any heating system. The FIA approved Matter supplied roll cage not only makes the car meet the required safety standards, but makes the car very stiff for better chassis response.
The brakes for the 993 Cup car were also improved with large front and rear brake calipers and disks, the latest 5 channel ABS system with motorsport control unit tuned specifically for the slick tires fitted to the car. The new springs and dampers are much stiffer than the 964 Cup version, and the ride height of the 993 Cup car is set at 70mm lower than the 993 Carrera 2 it is based on.

With a painted contrast dark blue livery applied in period, the car presents very well having flourished around the race tracks of Europe.
Sporting bolt on arches, huge wings, bonnet and boot pins, it’s clear this is no standard standard 993 or RS and along with air jacks, plus a bonnet cut out for the endurance spec fuel tank, there are few cars that deliver as much attitude as a race spec 993.
Ready to Drive this is certainly a very special example of Porsche Motorsport history.
INTERIOR
With two seats now for a brave passenger, no sound deadening and a Matter roll cage the interior is extreme. Air jacks are standard fit along with a fuel reserve light and the race programmed Motronic ECU behind the drivers seat.
As with all Porsche built race cars the Rev counter is turned on its side for a clear view of the climbing needle to the red line, with further indicators on this car to protect any over revs with shift lights and a sticker.
The Matter cage ensures a rigid body and satisfies safety concerns alongside a built in battery cut off system and fire extinguisher.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The original matching number M64/70 engine sits as a work of art in a clean engine bay having been subjected to a full rebuild just a few hundred miles ago.
The noise of this flat 6 is pure theatre, totally visceral and dominates the entire driving experience to include crackles, bangs and pops on the over run.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Iconic BBS centre lock 18 inch RSR wheels are finished in gold and present in lovely condition, with the rear stepped lip fitment filling those bolt on arches perfectly. 3 extra wheel sets are also provided – magnesium BBS, magnesium Speedlines and a set of ATS GTR’s.
The braking system is factory fit Brembo callipers front and rear finished in red and clamped to huge endurance spec drilled discs all round.
HISTORY FILE
Confirmed by the Certificate of Authenticity in the history file, this ultra rare Riviera Cup was supplied by Porsche Motorsport with a sport differential, forged alloy wheels without airbag or power steering.
Campaigned by EBI Motorsport for the 1994 season and driven primarily by Bruno Corradi, with the occasional round driven by Wolfgang Land; the 1993 German Carrera Cup champion. Significantly, this car would secure pole position for the Monte Carlo round in Monaco.
At the end of 1994 the car was sold to MAC Racing in Italy where it was converted to 1995 Carrera Cup specification and competed in the Italian Carrera Cup as confirmed by the technical passport. It competed in various races in Cup specification, such as GT Monza and Monza 2H, until 2000 when it was converted by MAC Racing to 993 RSR specification using factory Porsche parts – inclusive of RSR flares, Premier fuel cell, Bilstein Suspension with remote reservoir, 380mm Endurance spec front brakes, twin oil coolers, RSR intake assembly, BBS Magnesium wheels and various engine modifications.
It raced in RSR specification in the Porsche Club Italia Championship as well as the Monza 1000km in 2001; an FIA international event were it finished 12th overall. It was brought into the UK around 2003 and raced in the Porsche Open by Mike Harding and Willie Green. At some stage the car suffered an engine failure and was then placed into long-term storage. The current owner acquired the car in 2023 and set about recommissioning. The car retains it’s original engine and gearbox included a full engine rebuild, gearbox rebuild, new engine wiring loom, brake caliper rebuild, both oil coolers re-cored and a new clutch. Subsequently, the original Motronic ECU has been remapped by Chipwizards with the engine run-in on the dyno. Since re-build the car has not seen any track time and only a handful of road miles.
The history file features a whole host of period press and editorial featuring this specific car as well as rebuild and parts receipts, including communications with EBI motorsport’s Enrico Borghi.
Eligible for Peter Auto, Classic Cup and a multitude of domestic and International series as an RSR it comes complete with UK registration and a valid MOT certificate.
