MODEL HISTORY

Unveiled in prototype form at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1987, the Porsche 911 Speedster arrived for the 1989 model year as a fitting farewell to the long-running G-Series. Inspired by the minimalist 356 Speedster of the 1950s, it combined open-air motoring with one of the most distinctive interpretations of the classic air-cooled 911.

A shortened windscreen, lower hood line and signature twin-hump rear cover gave the Speedster a profile unlike any other 911 of its generation. Most were specified with the wide Turbo-look body, bringing flared wheel arches and the stronger visual presence of the 930 without its fixed rear wing.

Power came from Porsche’s proven naturally aspirated 3.2-litre flat-six, paired with the five-speed G50 manual gearbox. Producing 231bhp in European specification, it offered strong performance while retaining the mechanical character and usability that made the Carrera 3.2 such an enduring model.

Production lasted for just six months during 1989. Porsche built 2,103 examples with the Turbo-width body and only 171 in narrow-bodied export specification, establishing the original 911 Speedster as one of the rarest and most collectable factory variants of the G-Series.

Equipment

C16, RHD, Guards Red, Black Leather, G50 5-Speed Manual Gearbox, Limited Slip Differential, Sports Seats, Turbo-Look Wide Body, Speedster Rear Cover, 16-Inch Forged Fuchs Alloy Wheels, Electric Windows, Electric Mirrors, Central Locking, Porsche Alarm System, Tinted Glass, Velour Luggage Compartment, Cassette Storage Compartment, Leather Steering Wheel, VDO Instrumentation.

EXTERIOR

Finished in classic Guards Red, the wide-bodied silhouette of this Speedster looks sensational. The shortened windscreen, low hood line and distinctive twin-hump rear cover transform the familiar G-Series shape while the Turbo-style front and rear arches give the car real presence without the need for a fixed rear wing.

Presentation is first class throughout with the Guards Red paintwork retaining a rich, deep shine and an even finish across every panel. Panel fit is excellent while black trims, lights, lenses and rubber seals have all been carefully preserved. With the hood lowered beneath its sculpted cover, few air-cooled Porsches offer such a clean and instantly recognisable profile.

INTERIOR

Stepping inside reveals a wonderfully period Porsche interior, finished in Linen leather that perfectly complements the Guards Red exterior. Matching carpets and lower trim enhance the bright, open feel of the cabin, contrasted by a black upper dashboard that remains beautifully preserved and houses the familiar five-dial VDO instruments.

Factory Sports Seats offer excellent support and remain exceptionally well preserved, their slim backrests and pronounced bolsters perfectly complementing the Speedster’s driver-focused character. The desirable G50 five-speed manual gear lever sits within easy reach, while the classic three-spoke leather steering wheel and upright driving position provide the unmistakable feel that has become synonymous with the G-Series 911.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Power comes from Porsche’s proven air-cooled 3.2-litre flat-six, producing 231bhp in European specification and driving the rear wheels through the desirable five-speed G50 manual gearbox. Performance is strong, accompanied by the unmistakable response and soundtrack of a naturally aspirated air-cooled 911.

Free from the added weight and complexity of a turbocharged drivetrain, the Speedster delivers its power progressively and feels perfectly suited to open-air driving. Gear changes are precise and reassuring, making this final evolution of the Carrera 3.2 both engaging and remarkably usable.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

Classic 16-inch Fuchs alloy wheels sit perfectly beneath the widened Turbo-look arches, their polished outer rims and contrasting black centres completing the Speedster’s unmistakable period appearance.

Ventilated disc brakes are fitted at each corner, providing strong and consistent stopping performance. The wide wheel and tyre setup gives the car a confident stance while retaining the steering feel and mechanical character expected from an air-cooled 911.

HISTORY FILE

First delivered by Lancaster Porsche on 1st August 1989, as confirmed by its Certificate of Authenticity, this 911 Carrera Speedster has been exceptionally well maintained throughout its life.

The original service book contains an impressive 32 entries, demonstrating annual and timely maintenance prior to the car entering storage in 2021. It remained stored until 2026, when it was recommissioned and serviced by Porsche specialists Parr UK at 39,967 miles.

Considerable investment has also been made to ensure its cosmetic and mechanical condition remains of a high standard. The suspension, braking and air-conditioning systems have all been inspected and, where required, overhauled by Northway Porsche.

Its comprehensive history file is accompanied by the original owner’s booklet, spare key and radio card.
