The mighty Ferrari F12. Ferrari’s replacement for the 599 was a beautiful berlinetta, more compact and with scalpel sharp aerodynamics and startling performance from its 6.3 litre, direct-injection V12. Still naturally aspirated, it put out a mighty 720 bhp at 8250rpm and 519 lb ft of torque through a 7-speed dual-clutch automated semi-automatic gearbox. It retained the front mid engined layout and transaxle driveline but with the engine mounted lower, in addition to the seats and scuttle, resulting in a lower centre of roll. Other engineering and packaging advances contributed to more compact suspension and gearbox allowing for a shorter rear overhang and rearward shift in weight reduction.
The virtuous circle of lighter weight and increase torsional stiffness was aided by an aluminium body shaped by the air flow of a wind tunnel covering a monocoque underbody. Scaglietti constructed the monocoque from 12 different aluminuim alloys, resulting in a 20% uplift in torsional stiffness and 70kg reduction in weight in comparison to the 599. Cutting edge aerodynamics diverted the airflow from the wheel arches and improved every aerodynamic facet of the F12, resulting in a drag coefficient of less than 0.3 whilst still producing 123kg of downforce at 126mph.
Other technical highlights included the standard fitment of carbon-ceramic brakes and magnetorheological dampers, both of which allow this 720bhp supercar to both breath with the road and offer massive retardation at any speed.
The interior was typically Ferrari, rich with tactile materials and with ever increasing strides in quality. Like many a contemporary Ferrari, the steering wheel housed a great deal of the day-to-day driving controls, giving the driver the feel of an F1 pilot that the Italian brand is so synonymous for. The passenger display, as specified on this car was another highlight to the interior, giving the passenger a running commentary of the performance parameters as the driver enjoyed the car.
This completed a very through and detailed replacement to the Ferrari 599, keeping the Italian marque at the top of a class that it has dominated for so long.
