The Ferrari 458 Italia Spider. A moniker that is redolent with the passion that its manufacturer exudes, born from the very passion of Italy itself. From the cars, to the food to the people and even the lexicon – words like Ferrari, Italy, Tifosi – you are in no doubt that the 458 Italia Spider is a true Italian thoroughbred from the Ferrari stable.
The 458 Italia was the much lauded replacement for the Ferrari 430, launched at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show with the Spider following in two years later in 2011, again at Frankfurt. It was a completely new design and the first mainstream Ferrari to be available without the option of the traditional Ferrari gated manual gearbox. Purists were alarmed, but not for long, for only a short drive showed the 458 Italia to be an incredibly visceral driving machine, once again redefining what a junior supercar should be.
There was nothing junior about the performance, with the 4.5 litre, naturally aspirated V8 putting out a ferocious 554 bhp at a screaming 9,000 rpm with a fulsome 398 lb ft of torque available at at 6,000pm. Direct injection (its first application in a Ferrari mid-engined road car) allowed 80% of that torque to be utilised at 3,250rpm, giving massive performance wherever you were within the rev range. Indeed, contemporary road tests likened the 458 Italia to the mighty Ferrari F40, which it shared its distinctive tripe exhaust array with. The Spider hit the benchmark sprint to sixty mph in a scant 3 seconds, with a top speed of 199 mph.
Pininfarina was responsible for the artistry of the body shell, overseen by then Ferrari design director, Donato Coco. Aerodynamics played a major part in the design of the 458 shell, with a dramatic cab forward/mid engine stance looking like a track orientated model. With 140 kg of downforce at 120 mph, the 458 was indeed super stable at track speeds, too. Speaking of which, a certain Mr Schumacher was rumoured to have advised on the interior, with many design parallels to his F1 company car introducing themselves in the cabin of the 458, including a steering wheel heavy with controls, so one never had to take there hands off the wheel during spirited driving.
The Spider further enhanced the driving experience, allowing the dizzying air rending scream of the V8 to reach the occupants in an unadulterated fashion, The Spider featured a retractable hardtop wrought in aluminium, saving a claimed 25 kgs from the softop design from the 430 Spider. Design and engineering changes allowed the hood to stow away in 14 seconds.

This 458 Spider looks glorious in a coat of Bianco Avus paint, setting off the glossy carbon fibre exterior details to the rear panel and front bumper to perfection. The colour suits the athletic form of the 458 Spider, highlighting the various cooling and aerodynamic details from the front splitter and front wheel arch slashes to the rear lights which appear to ooze out of the bodywork. The darker alloys with the Giallo Modena brake calipers showing through complete a well matched and dramatic external appearance.
This 458 Spider is in excellent condition with flawless paint and no discernible marks to report. The roof works as it should, retracting in a swift 14 seconds, allowing for open air motoring and full volume from the V8 engine.
The interior of this 458 Spider is exceptionally well appointed with a tasteful mix of Carbon Fibre Racing seats in Nero leather with a white vertical racing stripe of leather, copious alcantara and Colour upon request stitching in contrasting white. The alcantara packages include Alcantara Boot Carpet (ALBC), Alcantara Interior Carpet (ALIC), Alcantara Upholstery for Headliner (ALIH), Alcantara Armrest (ARMC) and Alcantara Upper Zone (UALZ). The white rev counter provides sharp contrast to the dark colour pallet. The interior presents beautifully with no blemishes to report. The steering wheel feels beautiful to hold, with a perfect rim diameter, finished in alcantara.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The Ferrari engine presents as a work of art and with the extroverted details the Italian marque is known for. This Spider erupts into life at the push of the steering wheel mounted start button and settles into a very purposeful idle. It has a distinctive timbre being a flat plane V8 with a banshee scream as the revs rise to 9000 rpm. The 7 speed dual clutch gearbox is incredibly fast and very much in keeping with the genre of car, yet smooth and imperceptible when driving at a more comfortable pace.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The darker coloured wheels punctuate the Bianco Avus paintwork with the Giallo Modena brake calipers also demanding attention. The wheels on this example are free from any marks and shod with a set of Michelin Super Sport tyres with the fronts on 235/35/20 and the rears on 235/35/20, all showing good tread.
First registered 01/06/2012, this 458 Spider has only had two previous owners from new. A RHD UK car from new, it was supplied new by Graypaul Ferrari and serviced at the following intervals;
