Brabus, founded 1977 in Bottrop (Ruhr Area), Germany, is a high-performance aftermarket tuning company which specializes in Mercedes-Benz, Smart, and Maybach vehicles. Klaus Brackman and Bodo Buschmann established the company in 1977, the name deriving from the combined first three letters of their last names. Brabus became the largest Mercedes tuner, other than Mercedes-AMG which became a DaimlerChrysler affiliate in the 1990s.
Brabus’s primary focus is to achieve maximum engine performance through the increase of horsepower and torque. Customers can either buy cars from Brabus, or send in their car to be customized and/or overhauled. Customers ordering a car directly involves Brabus purchasing a particular model from Mercedes and then modifying it according to the customer’s requests. Brabus is known for providing expensive tuning and custom solutions. Brabus also offers cosmetic modifications including low profile spoilers, bodykits, carbon fiber splitters, and multi-piece alloy wheels. Other upgrades include racing LSDs, open racing exhaust systems, twelve-piston disc brakes, and engine remapping. Customers can also have complete engine overhauls, or have new crate engines from AMG modified for them.
Based on the Mercedes SL 65 AMG, Brabus builds the world’s most powerful roadster. The two-seater is powered by a 12-cylinder Biturbo engine with an uprated T65 RS unit. It produces 788 bhp of power and a peak torque of 1,420 Nm. A sprint time of 3.7 seconds from rest to 62 mph and of 9.8 seconds to 124 mph are impressive testaments to the car’s special status that is further bolstered by an electronically limited top speed of 217 mph. The exclusive equipment features also include BRABUS carbon-fiber bodywork components designed for maximum aerodynamic efficiency, custom-tailored BRABUS wheels with diameters up to 20 inches and exclusive options for the cockpit.

Where most tuning companies will provide some cosmetic additions in the spirit of aesthetics – Brabus have developed this SL in the wind tunnel using composite materials to both optimise chassis balance and support engine performance. This factory example has been exposed to the full styling exercise with full front and rear aprons, side skirts, rear spoiler and diffuser – generating a visual impact that strikes a perfect chord between style and aggression. In addition, a mean carbon bonnet scoop helps to feed the 4 air to water intercoolers.
Having covered only nominal mileage since production the Obsidian Black metallic paintwork presents as new; unmarked and swirl free.
This Brabus inspired cabin is the last word in opulence with the interior awash with Leather, Alcantara and Carbon Fibre. The bi-colour Cognac / Ambra combination is of a staggering quality throughout with quilted seat centres that offer quite superior comfort and support. Alcantara generously covers the dash – top, door caps and centre console, with carpets also treated to a finely stitched layout, whilst the leather appears all around the lower dash, door cards and outer seats. With just 55 miles recorded the cabin is in showroom condition – as new.
The Umbra alcantara clad steering wheel falls to hand perfectly, with unique Brabus paddles and an exhaust mode that alters the character of the monstrous twin turbo V12.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The T65 RS engine produces 788 bhp of power at 5,500 rpm and an even more impressive peak torque of 1,047 lb-ft available from just 2,100 rpm! Peak torque is limited electronically to 811 lb-ft. The in-house Brabus team have developed a high-tech Biturbo system with custom high-performance manifolds that feature integrated turbine housings and high-performance turbochargers. The tuning also includes four water-to-air intercoolers, housed in a space provided by a carbon-fiber hood scoop, the noise of which is incredible as you hear huge gulps of air inhaled and dispelled through the wastegates.
A mention must be made of the high-performance exhaust system featuring free-flow metal catalysts and ceramic-coated tailpipes. An integrated butterfly valve in the exhaust is enabled by switchable active sound management on the steering wheel; at the push of a button the driver can chose between a discrete “coming home” and a markedly more serious exhaust note.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
As an alternative to the 19 inch examples of the SL 65, the Brabus suspension engineers have developed an exclusive 20 inch variant. The new Monoblock R “Platinum Edition” forged wheel are subject to a state of the art manufacturing process resulting in lightweight construction and maximum strength. In addition to the innovative construction, this wheel design also offers unique looks with ten double spokes arranged in two matte titanium and fully polished planes.
Ride is incredibly refined considering the wheel size – the suspension setup absorbs almost all imperfections at point of impact, rather than upset the chassis and feedback into the cabin. Especially impressive with the car being a Convertible. The Mercedes Ceramic brake system is surprisingly feel some at low speeds / temperatures with good bite at the top of the pedal.
This SL was sent straight to Brabus from new and holds a corresponding Brabus chassis number. Having been stored carefully in a collection the car has been brought to market for the first time.
Registered in the UK with V5 in hand and 12 months MOT.
